The Louisiana Health Care Alliance (LHCA) originated under the auspices of the Greater Baton Rouge Industrial Managers Association (GBRIMA) in 1984, now the Greater Baton Rouge Industr Alliance (GBRIA). The primary focus of these original 48 primarily petrochemical company members was to find a way to work together to get rapidly rising health care costs under control.
A similar organization had begun in New Orleans a year earlier and it was through the merger in 1990 of these two groups that the Louisiana Health Care Alliance was created. While the Baton Rouge group was employer only, the New Orleans based Business Coalition was a broad based membership organization that included other stakeholders (i.e., health plans, health care providers, etc.). It was from this broad foundation that LHCA reached out and began chapter development in Alexandria, Lafayette, Acadiana, Baton Rouge, Central Louisiana, Lake Charles, Shreveport and Monroe.
